The great commission is to go all over the world and preach the gospel to all nations and disciple those who would believe.
Each of the gospels as well as the book of Acts includes a direct expression of Christ commissioning his people to fulfill His mission in the world. There is a clear mandate to complete world evangelization . Jesus is pointing His unique place as Lord and He demands that people be trained to live under His Lordship. He is calling for His Kingship to become effective in the lives of people within every people.
The mandate to "disciple the peoples" does not refer to a particular ministry activity. Rather disciplining "all the peoples" must be understood as a once for all global goal. Nurturing and training individuals and small groups in basic discipleship skills who will then pass them on to others is a wonderful and necessary activity. The original language used in Mathew 28 indicates that there will be a once in history achievement of establishing Christ ward movements within every people group. Christ's commission uses the Greek phrase panta - ta - etne, which in most English translations is translated vaguely as "all nations". The Greek phrase is more precisely understood in English as "all the peoples". The full phrase panta ta etne is used to describe ethnicities defined by race, language or culture. In other words Jesus has in view the people groups of the world as they tend to understand and define themselves by language, lineage or socio cultural factors.
Jesus was issuing a mandate for the entire age and for every believer. It is not a command that any single person can accomplish. It is a mandate that can only be fulfilled collectively. The great commission defines the task in terms of people groups. In our day, many have recognized that focusing on people groups is important.
Evangelizing the world is not an easy task. We have to breakthrough totally unknown languages and cultures. It involves great sacrifices, even risking lives and all comforts. It is estimated that there are 8000 unreached people groups in the world. Most of them are found in just four major cultural blocs: Muslim (3,300 groups), Hindu (2,400 groups), Ethno-religious (1,200 groups) and Buddhists (700 groups). Don't forget there are unreached people groups in the non-religious and other religious blocs as well.
When the disciples asked Jesus about the end of the world Jesus answered in Mathew 24:14 like this: "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations and then the end will come". These are the words of Jesus.
Can this be done? Is it possible? Yes. It can be accomplished with the help of the Holy Spirit and dedication of the believers.
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but shall have everlasting life. (John 3:16). It is God's plan to save humanity. He wants to bless the whole world. He selected just one man Abraham through whom God wants to bless the whole world. You and me are just one person whom God wants to use to bless the world. God wants the world to know that Jesus is Lord of all and everyone should recognize and worship Him. He wants to fill the earth with His gory as the waters cover the sea.
We have great responsibility which we cannot take it lightly. The great commission is a command to obey. We have to do our part. Whenever possible we should all go and have a firsthand experience. If you are unable to go send someone who is willing to go and inconvenience himself by financial help. If you are unable to go or send someone, you can at least pray to the Lord of the harvest to raise up laborers. When I say at least I am not devaluing the prayer priority or power of prayer. We all have to pray very earnestly for the evangelization of the whole world, all people groups around the globe. We have to pray with great burden and faith. God is still in control. God will make it happen, It is God's work. We can hasten the Lord's coming by fervent prayer to reach the unreached ethnic groups with the gospel of Christ. It is His work. We are His servants. I cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is to pray for the evangelization of the world.
It is unfortunate that even though the gospel came to us through the Apostle Thomas in A.D. 58 and migrants from Syria in the 4th and 8th centuries, even after 2000 years we could win only about 6% of the population of India to Christ. We need to examine our lives and rededicate our lives to evangelize our nation.
I have done a little part to evangelize India among the Tribal population in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhyapradesh and Orissa states. I wish I could have done more but with the limited resources I could only accomplish so much with the help of the Lord. I have travelled by foot, on bullock carts, bicycles and automobiles. My desire is to do more and I remain willing to be used by God.
In my last mission trip to India I was introduced to Patmos Ministries. I was privileged to preach in several of their churches in Gujarat and Madhyapradesh. I came to know that Patmos Ministries have work in nine states of India. They are Madhyapradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka and Kerala. They have also started work in Nepal. Brother Shibu Joseph is the founder of Patmos Ministries. They are doing a great job to evangelize India by partnering with other leaders in different states. He has a group of trained able workers working as pastors and evangelists. I am impressed and humbled by the humility of Shibu Joseph by maintaining a low profile while doing tremendous and commendable work towards the evangelization of India.
It is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.
